Fern Ridge Wildlife Area Photo Oregon Sunrise

This is a photo of sunrise at the Fern Ridge State Wildlife Area between Eugene and Veneta, Oregon, taken in February 2006. My house in Eugene was on the edge of the West Eugene Wetlands, near this major wildlife area, and I was often out here watching birds at sunrise and sunset. It's a great place to watch geese and a host of wading birds, big and small. When I took this deceptively warm-looking scene, the Willamette Valley was experiencing record lows, the temperature was in the high teens, and much of the water, like me, was beginning to freeze.
