Red Rock Canyon Photos
by Lee Reeder

The following photos were taken at Red Rock Canyon in the Mojave Desert on Jan. 3, 2009.

The colors were a bit subdued because of the cloudy skies on this winter day,
but you can see that colors still abound in the cliffs and in the rocks on the ground.

To get an idea of the scale of some of these cliffs, check out the guy at left, who is 100 yards back from the cliffs. Now look at the two slots together at the bottom middle of the cliff. His girlfriend, who he is photographing, is a small, dark shadow at the bottom of the slot on the right.

The sun peeked through for a moment as we walked through this wet, steep-walled canyon.

Another view of the same rocks as above. The red one on the left is 25 feet tall.

Going farther up the canyon gave us the first view in the distance of the cliffs shown below.

The highest canyon walls in the middle of this photo are about 80 feet tall.

You can spend all day exploring the designs nature carves in this unique place where harder lava layers sit atop softer sedimentary rock, making the underlying rock erode quicker. This one reminds me of a temple.
You can get a sense of the scale of this sculpture in the photo above. It is at the top left.

All of the cliff walls throughout the state park are tilted at this same angle, no matter where you are.

These are the massive red cliffs you see from Highway 14.

Another shot with layers and clouds.
