California
Pitcher Plant Photo The
carnivorous California Pitcher Plant (Darlingtonia californicus) is
found mainly in a small range in Northern California and Southwestern
Oregon. I found hundreds of them growing along the northwestern shore
of glacial Castle Lake in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. California
Pitcher Plants consume insects that are lured by sweet nectar and are
trapped in their tubular stalks. The nutrients they derive from the
insects allow the California Pitcher Plant to live in nutrient poor
soils where many other plants cannot compete with them. |
