Loma
Prieta Earthquake Photos, San Francisco, 1989 In 1989, I was the lead editor of Rescue, a national magazine for rescuers that I had helped start the year before. On Oct. 17, I was in my car in San Diego, listening to the opening minutes of the World Series on the radio at a little after 5 p.m. when got a firsthand account of what would soon be known as the Loma Prieta Earthquake. I immediately packed up my camera and camping gear and was off. By sunrise, I had driven more than 400 miles and was at the site of the I-880 collapse reporting live. I spent the next five days living in my truck and traveing with EMS and rescue professionals as they responded to the developing aftermath of this major event. These are two of the more scenic shots from that experience. To see my feature article from Rescue Magazine, click here (PDF--5MB). |
