Teddy Bear Cholla and Mojave Mound Cactus
Joshua Tree National Park

by Lee Reeder

Do not hug Teddy Bear Cholla (Opuntia bigelovii), no matter how cuddly it may look. Early settlers used to call it "jumping cactus" because it seemed to jump at people and get into their clothes and skin. To the left is a Mojave Mound Cactus (Echinocereus polyacanthus) just starting to bloom.
