Convict Lake in the Sierras is one of my favorite vacation places, whether I want to take a challenging backpacking trip into the high country and alpine lakes beyond this photo or relax at a cabin among the aspens and treat myself to the rustic resort's four-star restaurant. This lake was named after escapees from a Nevada jail that took on the law in a shootout during the late 1800s. The rock in the center on Laurel Mountain is some of the oldest and most interesting in the Sierra.
