Four
Prickly Poppy Flowers The
Prickly Poppy (Argemone munita) is often mistaken for the Coulter's
Matilija Poppy (Romneya coulteri) or the Bristly Matilija Poppy (Romneya
trichocalyx). The flowers are identical, but the plants are different.
The flowers on this plant in Summit Valley in San Bernardino County
were about six inches in diameter. Prickly poppies may be found all
over the high desert and chaparral in California from north to south
in the late spring and early summer. In 2006, I found them all over
the eastern slopes of the Sierras and the Cascades. I wake up to this
image every morning because a large framed version hangs at the foot
of my bed.
