Ocotillo
in Bloom The
Ocotillo (Fonquieria splendens) is a strange plant of the lower deserts.
Its branches reach about 20 feet in the air. Flowers and even the leaves
appear only briefly after winter rains, but they both wither and fall
away as the soil dries out. We caught this one with both leaves and
flowers in spring after a very wet winter (2004-2005) in the Pinto Basin
of Joshua Tree National Park. |
