Crater Lake North Rim Reflection Photo
by Lee Reeder

Part of the rim of Crater Lake reflects in the glassy early morning water in this photo taken on June 18, 2006. The two peaks, from left to right, are The Watchman and Hillman Peak. The crater is the remnant of the posthumously named Mount Mazama, which exploded approximately 7,000 years ago with a force 42 times the eruption of Mt. Saint Helens in 1980. The explosion blew 5,000 feet off of the mountain. Lava then sealed the crater, and over a few hundred years, the lake filled with precipitation. At more than 1,900 feet deep, Crater Lake is the deepest lake in North America and the seventh deepest in the world.
