Castle Rock Trail, Big Bear Lake

These photos were taken on Memorial Day, 2007.

On the way up the trail this dead tree seemed to want to come to life and move.

Castle Rock is actually thousands of big rocks, but the main structure is imposing.

My first photo of a Western Skink. Highlight of my day. I've seen them before, but they're usually way too fast.

This is what Big Bear Lake looks like from near the top of Castle Rock.

I love rock scrambling and do it often, but I am terrified of heights (and that's exactly why I love to do it).
But what scares me more is when the wife and my 10-year-old boy do it. Here, she's pointing out their route they took to climb to the top.
I stopped watching after this.

Steller's Jays out here in the wild are very different from the ones in our neighborhoods.
This is a shy, wild one playing dead in the nest along the trail.
