Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest Photos
by Lee Reeder

Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest photos taken at about 10,000 feet in the White Mountains east of the Sierra Nevada Range of California. These pictures were shot in the Shulman and Methuselah Groves of the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest in late August 2008. The trees in these groves are the oldest living creatures on Earth, with one, named Methuselah by scientists, having been dated as being more than 4,800 years old. The identity of this particular tree is kept secret by the Forest Service to prevent vandalism. I was alone in both groves at sunrise during my trip, and along with a sense of awe at the age and beauty of these creatures, I was surprised to also experience the most complete silence I have ever felt in my life—a total absence of sound.
