Lee Reeder I am a photographer, writer and working environmentalist who lives half-time in the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California and half-time in Encinitas in San Diego County, enjoying the beauty of both the mountains and the beach. In my personal life, I am the proud father of three great children: Christopher, 23; Natalie, 16; and Austen, 12. I am also fortunate to be sharing my days now with the love of my life and high school sweetheart, Karen Langston (formerly Karen Stoddard), who decided in early 2009 after 29 years of us being apart to drop down from heaven, out of the blue, and see what was happening with me. In my professional life I am the Executive Director of the Santa Ana Watershed Association, leading a dynamic, respected non-profit organization that removes invasive species, restores natural habitat and protects endangered species throughout the 3,000 square miles of the Santa Ana River Watershed of Southern California, which is home to more than 5 million people. I am also a member of the advisory board of Inland Empire Waterkeeper, a non-profit environmental organization focused on water quality over a wide area of Southern California. My focus in that capacity is the protection and enhancement of the Temescal Creek Watershed and water quality awareness throughout the region. In addition, I am a member of the State of California Department of Water Resources Alluvial Fan Task Force, which is creating a model ordinance for development in these sensitive ecological areas throughout Southern and Central California. I have been photographing scenery and nature since the age of 12 while hiking and backpacking with my first cameras (a Mamiya, a Miranda and a Konica) in Southern California. I have been developing my own photos since the age of 15. At the age of 19, I began working professionally as a photojournalist in the U.S. Army in West Germany. Photography has been a big part of a lifelong journalism career that has put me at the editorial and creative helms of several national and international magazines and journals. Although writing and editorial management have been the bulk of my work, photography has always been my passion. In 2004, at the age of 47, I created my scenic and nature photography business, 1000 Words. Since then I have traveled extensively in the West, capturing moments in nature. People consistently tell me I have "the eye," meaning a different perspective that sets my photography apart from that of others. It's partly that, but it's also the result of much patience and hard work. Anyway, I hope it all results in me sharing my passion for the natural beauty of our world through my own perspective, and for your enjoyment. I am also co-author of the book Hell on Earth: The Wildfire Pandemic, which was released in August 2008. The book explores climate change and its growing effects on wildfires in the United States and around the world. In Hell on Earth, two authors who have experienced wildfire devastation firsthand put a human face on a global wildfire pandemic. Publisher's Weekly called it "...a rapidly-moving, thriller-like account." Click here to learn more about the book, which is now on sale nationally and internationally in bookstores and online.
Lee Reeder exclusively uses and enjoys the latest in Nikon® cameras and lenses. Except for slight corrections in fade, clarity and brightness, what you see is what I photographed.
